The Art of Portrait

A fine art portrait is more than a photograph—it captures the essence, personality, and presence of the subject, creating a timeless work to be cherished for generations.

Commission a Fine Art Portrait

Commission a Portrait

The first step is a personal consultation to discuss the portrait’s size, setting, clothing, and composition. During this conversation, I will explain the creative process and the procedures I offer for creating your portrait. Each procedure follows a distinct artistic approach, with its own time frame and level of investment. I offer three portrait procedures.

Traditional Life Sitting by Luz

A traditional life sitting offers a rare and immersive experience, allowing the subject to be directly involved in the creation of the portrait. Depending on the chosen medium—painting or drawing—each life-sitting session lasts approximately three hours.

The total time required to complete the portrait is determined by its complexity. To minimize the time the subject needs to sit, photographic references will be used for elements other than the face and primary body structure, such as the background, furnishings, setting, and atmosphere.

Life sittings may take place in my art studio or at a location of the client’s choice, provided the artwork on the easel can remain in the same position until the sitting is completed. Once the face and body are largely established, the portrait will be returned to my studio, where photographic references will be used to complete the remaining elements.

Photography Reference Taken by Paulo Luz

Once a general concept for the portrait has been established, I conduct a professional digital photography session at the subject’s home, workplace, or preferred location.

When time and conditions allow, I may also create a small painted sketch of the subject’s head from life. This sketch, which takes approximately three hours, serves as a valuable color reference. While not essential, it helps ensure accurate skin tones and a more efficient painting process.

Back in the studio, I will select the most suitable images and present a portrait layout for your review. This stage allows for any adjustments before final approval. Once the layout is approved, it becomes the primary reference for the portrait, and a projected completion time will be provided.

As the portrait nears completion, a digital image of the artwork will be sent for your review. Any reasonable refinements you request will be made. Upon final approval, a precise delivery timeline will be confirmed.

Existing Photography Provided by the Client

This procedure offers flexibility and is often essential in situations where life sittings or new photography are not possible, particularly in the case of loved ones who have passed. The client will provide several photographs of the subject, from which I will select the most suitable reference image. For the portrait to be successful, the chosen photograph must meet specific criteria, including resolution, lighting, and composition. To assist in this process, I provide a detailed guide to help you select an existing photograph or take new images yourself. This guide explains how to choose the appropriate angle, lighting, and expression to ensure a strong and expressive reference suitable for a refined, high-quality portrait.
